Community Shows Support for United Family Services’ Annual Holiday Store Despite Recession

United Family Services assisted struggling Charlotte families this Christmas by providing free gifts, stocking stuffers and treats.
The agency hosted its annual Holiday Store event on Dec. 19 at Trinity Episcopal School.
Hundreds of unwrapped gifts crowded the school’s gymnasium thanks to the generous donations from individuals, churches and corporations.
“The UFS Holiday Store was an amazing success this year,” said Kelly Forney, director of the agency’s Residential Victim Services program. “We are fortunate to live in such a generous community that continues to support the Holiday Store year after year; however, this year it seemed that people dug even deeper to support us.”
During the day-long event, agency staffers created a Mother’s Store and a Children’s Store for families staying at the Shelter for Battered Women.
Inside the gymnasium, rows of makeshift aisles were packed with donated clothing, toys, school supplies, and household goods for the mothers and their children to select presents for each other.
The outpour of support brought joy and smiles to the agency’s former and current clients who were unable to provide presents for the holidays.
“There were many tears of joy shed on that day by both staff and clients,” Forney said.
Forney said she hopes to continue the program’s success next year.
