The Long Lasting Financial Impact of Domestic Violence on Victims
Domestic Violence organizations and
networks across the country are calling on Americans to observe the
month of October in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month
(DVAM).
In
Charlotte, various organizations will offer a series of educational
workshops to increase the public’s awareness and
understanding of the prevalence of domestic violence.
On
October 6, the Mecklenburg County Community Support Services
Women’s Commission hosted a discussion on the long lasting
economic abuse that domestic violence victims experience.
Often,
the element of economic abuse is overlooked by the physical, verbal or
sexual abuse that the victims endure, said Kelly Forney, Director of
Residential Victim Services for UFS and discussion facilitator.
“The
effects of economic abuse can be just as long lasting and far reaching
as other forms of domestic violence,” Forney said.
“Many victims find that it takes years for them to
financially recover from the damaging effects of economic
abuse.”
For
example, a batterer might force his victim to quit her job so that she
can stay at home and take care of the children. He might also
confiscate her assets and other financial resources and forbid her from
handling money.
Attendees
learned how to identify the signs of economic abuse, about community
resources that area available to help, and how the UFS Legal
Representative Project can help victims suffering from all forms of
domestic violence.
