UFS Recognizes Child Abuse Prevention and Sexual Assault Awareness Month

United Family Services employees recognized Child Abuse Prevention and Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April by participating in the Blue Ribbon and Teal Ribbon campaigns.
Employees wore blue ribbons to signify the need to protect children from abuse and neglect, and teal ribbons to represent a stand against sexual violence.
UFS Director of Victims Services Brandy Redmile Stephens said the agency hopes to create greater community awareness on the prevalence of child abuse and sexual violence.
One in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused by the time they reach 18. And every two minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted, she said.
Stephens added that nine out of 10 children never tell about their abuse.
“We want to help prevent this from happening to them or a loved one,” she said. “And to know that there is help and resources available if someone does experience child abuse or sexual violence.”
Stephens added that recognizing April as Child Abuse Prevention and Sexual Assault Awareness month also helps to honor the survivors of child abuse and sexual violence and empowers the community to join the movement for a violence-free community.
“We need to fight for the protection of children and the strengthening of families,” Stephens said. “We hope that concerned citizens will become volunteers and get involved with UFS to help in this movement. Together, we can make a difference.”
