United Family Services Celebrates 100 Years of Service
For 100 years, UFS has provided programs and services to help those who are experiencing life’s challenges, crises and transitions. As one of the area’s oldest nonprofits, UFS provides outreach services and assistance to more than 60,000 people annually in the Charlotte, Cabarrus, Union, and the Mooresville/Lake Norman area. Those programs include Counseling and Education, Consumer Credit and Housing Counseling, Domestic Violence, Rape Crisis Intervention, and Victim Assistance. Established in 1909, UFS was formed by a group of 100 business and religious leaders who each pledged $25 a year to support those in need. As the agency evolved over the decades, it expanded to include services to fit the needs of the time, including a successful adoptive foster care program. In the late 70s, the agency opened The Shelter for Battered Women, one of the first in the state and the only one in Mecklenburg County today.
